Although Kalimantan is still an insider tip for divers, one highlight is chasing the next in the Celebes Sea east of Borneo. The visibility is 20 to 30 meters all year round.
We first head to Derrawan, the island closest to the mainland. Muck divers get more than their fair share of critters in rather shallow water, such as pygmy seahorses, flamboyant cuttlefish, various types of frogfish, mandarin fish, blue ring octopus, wonderpus, ghost pipe shrimp fish etc. .
Steep drop offs and strong currents characterize the diving spots around Maratua. Here we find intact underwater seascapes with beautiful corals, many turtles, reef sharks, eagle rays and an immense school of barracudas.
The steep walls of the island of Kakaban southeast of Maratua offer great drift diving. Thresher, leopard and other sharks are very common. On Kakaban there is also a Jellyfish Lake with a variety of harmless, non-stinging jellyfish – a very worthwhile destination …
Beautiful coral gardens surround the small island of Sangalaki. The diversity under water is enormous – from jacks, mackerel, snappers, tunas and barracudas to devil rays and reef sharks, everything is represented. You can stroll along the sandy beaches and experience the sunset and watch countless turtles lay their eggs.
On the way back we make a detour towards the still rarely frequented South Atoll. To finish the trip on a last highlight, whale sharks can be regularly observed there.
If there is sufficient demand, it is possible to organize a trip to the wild orang utans in the Kutai National Park (a trip from Berau Airport takes 8 hours).
